Early Intervention (EI) is a Coordinated System
EI services support parents of infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities. EI is grounded in the philosophy that young children learn best from familiar people in familiar settings. That’s why your local EI team, which includes a service coordinator and service providers, works with you in your home or other places you and your family spend time to develop a coordinated plan.
EI Is Built on a Developmental Approach
EI builds upon and provides supports and resources to assist parents and caregivers to enhance children’s learning and development through everyday routines. It is a collaborative, home and community-based system where you and a team work together to provide ongoing support to your child.
What can Early Intervention do for Families?
Early Intervention provides many types of services to infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities and their families. The first step is to determine if an infant/toddler has a delay or disability and/or need for service. All children referred to a EI are assigned to an EI Service Coordinator. That Service Coordinator will:
* Coordinate an Evaluation and/or Assessment to determine if the child has a developmental delay and/or a need for Early Intervention service(s).
* Assist the family in finding any needed EI service and will coordinate those services with the family/team.
* Connect parents with resources in their local communities including community based Early Intervention Playgroups.
Who can be referred to Early Intervention?
Any child age Birth-3 whose parent has a concern with that child’s development is eligible to have a developmental evaluation/assessment.
Who is eligible for Early Intervention Services?
* Children ages birth – 3 who are determined (through the evaluation process) to have a developmental delay in at least one area of development.
* Children ages birth – 3 who have a qualifying disability and who show a need (through the assessment process) to have an Early Intervention service.
*** Early Intervention services are NOT income based
Cost?
Service Coordination, Evaluations/Assessments and most EI services are provided in the home and at No Cost to the family!.
